MEMOIR WRITING WORKSHOP WITH NOTABLE AUTHOR JUDY LIGHT AYYILDIZ, FOLLOWED BY A POTLUCK PICNIC.

JUNE 30, 2013

Turkic American Unity Association was honored to have Judy Light Ayyildiz, author of Forty Thorns, lead a memoir-writing workshop intended to encourage participants to successfully compile their cultural stories. In this enlightening workshop, Judy Light Ayyildiz explained the importance of oral stories and the need to preserve and relay them. Participants engaged in several fun and thought-provoking exercises that stimulated their creativity and enhanced their writing skills. The aim of this workshop was to:

  • Encourage all participants to compile and preserve their cultural stories
  • Provide necessary and helpful skills that would facilitate the writing process
  • Foster an open and non-judgemental environment allowing participants the opportunity to reflect internally and learn from one another
  • Empower attendees to realize they possess all the necessary skills and talent to effectively convey their stories
  • Preserve the legacy of the Turkic people on both an individual and collective level
  • Establish a solid foundation on which participants can confidently compile their stories and showcase them at a storytelling exhibit to be held by TAU in the near future.
